Description: I purchased this painting in the city of Puri in Orissa, India in 1971 while I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in a nearby village. At the time we called them "Puri Paintings" but I think they are more correctly called Pattachitra. The paintings are done in Puri by artists generally in vivid colors but in the case of this one in black and white. They are painted on sized tussar silk. Our painting is done in a mandala form with Krishna and Radha in the center surrounded by adoring female followers or Gopi. Puri is the center of the cult of Jagannath (and abstract representation of Krishna) The central roundel is supported by a tree whose leaves embrace it. Beyond the central roundel is a riotous series of floral borders and infilled brackets. The overall size of the painting is 15" x 18". It is in generally good condition with a central crease and minor loses to the outermost white border. Stock number SA2A-483
