Description: Hyo Asahi Kadan, 1985 / Asahi Shimbun Curatorial Department, Asahi Sonorama Description Selected by: Samio Maekawa, Miya Hiiragiji, Yoshimi Kondo, Akiko Baba Afterword: Akemi Satake #202112 What is tanka? A form of poetry. It consisted of 5 phrases and 31 sounds, 5-7-5-7-7, and was also called "31 characters" or "31 characters". It is ancient, along with long songs and whirling songs, and is found in the Kiki songs, and then the flourishing Manyo period has arrived. Since then, it has been handed down to the present day with a long history and tradition as a central poetic form in the world of aristocratic poetry and the medieval and early modern samurai poetry that has been developed mainly in the collection of edicts. After the Heian period, long poems and whirlwind poems declined, and tanka came to represent the poetry of Chinese poetry, and waka came to refer to the tanka form, but after the Meiji era, the term tanka became common again. From around 1880, under the influence of Western poetry, the theory of waka reform by Suematsu Kensumi and others arose, and the new waka movement such as Asakasha and "Flower of the Heart" rejected the old schools of Dogami, Katsuraen, and Edo, and in 1899, the Negishi Tanka Society and Shin Shisha were established, the former was succeeded by "Araragi" and the latter was active by "Meisei". From these, the lifestyle tanka of the late Meiji period, the socialist tanka of the mid-Taisho period and later, and the proletarian tanka of the Showa era were born, and the movement of free rhythm also occurred. What is Waka? "Yamato Uta" means a song unique to the country of Japan, and its concept was established by the establishment of the "Kokin Wakashu" in the Heian period, so as a specific waka singing style, it was recognized as a unique song form at that time, and tanka, long song, whirling song, and Buddha ashiishi song, and it became the scope of waka in a narrow sense until the present day. The basic number of sounds is the repetition of five-syllable and seven-syllable phrases. There are tanka of 57577, a long song in which 57 is repeated three or more times and concluded with a seven, a whirlwind song in which 577 is repeated twice, and a Buddha foot stone song in which the seven is added to the tanka form, which is engraved on the Buddha''s foot stone monument at Yakushi-ji Temple in Nara. Most of the songs in the Manyoshu are tanka or long poems, and the long poems have intermittently reached the present day in connection with the respect for the Manyoshu, but they are incessant tanka, and the history of waka can be said to be the history of tanka. The first of the extant songbooks is the Manyoshu, which produced 21 collections of Japanese poetry from the Heian period to the Muromachi period, but there are also private collections. In modern times, it is almost a collection of individual songs. From tanka there was the differentiation of renka, which gave rise to haiku (couplets), and in the tanka form, rhapsodies that deviated from elegance, satirical decapitations, do-ka, fortune-telling and magical songs.
