Description: I have never seen a piece of rhodochrosite this large carved into jewelry. This amazing pin/pendant measures 2 3/8" tall by 1 7/8" wide. The color is a dark pink, striated with thin stripes of white and marked with scattered white spots. The carving is of Tlaltecuhtli, the earth deity, who devours and replenishes. As you can see from the pictures, the stone is about 1/4" thick. Rhodochrosite is mined in many places in the world, including Mexico, but I have not seen another piece done in this stone from the Golden Era of Mexico Silver, the 1930s and 1940s. Part of the reason may be that rhodochrosite is relatively low on the Moh's hardness scale, 3.5 to 4, and therefore not as durable as other stones. This stone is usually made into pendants or earrings, to guarantee it won't suffer damage. Chain is not sterling, I believe it's silver plated. Chain measures 26", entire necklace 28 3/4". Weight of entire pendant is 70 grams, mostly stone. This is an amazing and rare item, from the 1930s or 1940s. No eagle number, which means it was likely made before the late 1940s.
