Description: [Photo Album]: Ace Motorcycle Club with Girls' Auxiliary of Long Island, New York, 1931-1940s Author: SCHMIERER, Howard G., Elsie Schmierer Title: [Photo Album]: Ace Motorcycle Club with Girls' Auxiliary of Long Island, New York, 1931-1940s Publication: (Glendale, Long Island: 1931-1940s) Description: Hardcover. Later quarto album (10" x 11 ½"), spiral-bound with green snakeskin patterned boards. Contains 60 gelatin silver prints dating from 1931-39, together with nine pages of newspaper and magazine clippings mounted onto the rectos and versos of cardboard leaves enclosed in plastic sleeves. Laid in is an early Ace Motorcycle Club jacket patch (6" x 7 ¾") stitched in red, white, and black. With Howard G. Schmierer's business card: "Ace M.C." mounted on the first leaf. The boards are neatly detached from the metal spiral, the cardboard leaves are toned with some prints and clippings loose or detached from the mounts, scattered short tears at the edges and corners, a few are torn with minimal loss at the corners, near very good.A collection of lively images compiled by Howard and Elsie Schmierer, leading members of the Ace Motorcycle Club, consisting of six large format prints of the Club's male and female members dating from 1939, and 54 snapshots of club members and both Howard and Elsie spanning the years 1931-40. Also included are several local newspaper and magazine articles about the club dating from circa 1939 through the mid-1940s. Organized in 1933, the Ace Motorcycle Club grew to 20 members in 1934 and set up a clubhouse at Glendale chartered under the American Motorcycle Association. The club participated in races, hill climbs, picnics, etc., including the Annual Motorcycle Race on Long Island. As noted in a local newspaper article: The fact that so many fellows had wives or girlfriends riding with them, prompted the addition of a Girls' Auxiliary to the club in 1939: an independent club that runs on similar rules and by-laws as the men's club."The album opens with large format prints taken in 1939, including two (or more) taken by Kurt Severin of the Three Lions photo agency, to document the formation of the Girls' Auxiliary. Among the snapshots are motorcycling images of early club members from the mid-1930s, together with motorcycling and personal images of Howard and Elsie Schmierer with friends and family, including two images of a homemade racing car. A compelling collection of images documenting one of New York's earliest coed motorcycle clubs.
