"History of Roman Catholicism"-1836-Holbrook New York-Leather-Popery in US-Rare

Description: Offered is the antique leather-bound book "History of Roman Catholicism", published in 1836 by S. L. Holbrook & Co. in New York. No author is stated. The book is apparently a first edition, with a "entered according to act of Congress" date of 1836, also. In addition to the history of the Roman Catholic Church from 325 AD to the time of publication the book also contains a section on the history of Jesuitism, Monachism and the Inquisition as well as a section on the "Secret Designs and Operations of Popery in the United States". Note that this last section (and perhaps others) may be offensive to some readers. This is a rare find; at the time of original listing I could not find any other copies for sale on eBay and only two elsewhere. The book is approx. 9" x 5 3/4" and contains 600 pages, including the index. It is in fair to good condition. The brown leather cover has moderate wear, with some small bits missing at the top and bottom of the spine. The gold words and designs on the spine are still faintly visible. Clear tape has been placed on the front and back edges of the spine as well as along the top and bottom edges of the front and back covers, apparently a long time ago. There is an area with small yellow dots on the front. There is cracking inside the front but not in the back; in the front the cover is pulling away from the spine. An old label from the Seminary Lyceum Library (location not stated) is inside the front cover (I see no other indication of former library book status), as well as a small label from a New York bookstore, old enough to have an old-style phone number beginning with two letters. The marble endpapers have some fading and light wear but are reasonably clean. I see no missing or torn pages, but they are wrinkled. The front endpaper and a few pages following are nearly detached, but otherwise all of the pages seem fairly well-attached to the binding. The pages have yellowed and have some light foxing but they are reasonably clean and clear for their age. I see no writing in the book other than some words and numbers written on the library label, some occasional underlined words and a few tiny ink spots. I have a lot of experience with vintage and antique books but am not an expert so please let me know if my description is missing information and you have additional questions.
