Morrison, the chief engineer on the Spindle Eye even while it served as a relay radio ship for the atomic bomb test Operation Crossroads at Bikini Atoll in 1946. “ON THIS CHRISTMAS DAY -- THE FIRST IN FIVE YEARS ON WHICH OUR GUNS HAVE BEEN SILENT -- I JOIN WITH ALL MEMBERS OF THIS COMMAND IN THANKING GOD FOR OUR DELIVERANCE FROM THE DEATH AND DESTRUCTION OF WAR” Reads in full: “Office of the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, 25 December, 1945, Christmas Message, On this Christmas Day -- the first in five years on which our guns have been silent -- I join with all members of this Command in thanking God for our deliverance from the death and destruction of war and pray that our merciful Lord will sustain us in our efforts to realize in its fullest the ideal which Christ brought to the world -- peace on earth and to all men, good will.
