Description: This original impressionist oil on hardboard painting is by the Massachusetts-born landscape artist and art educator Henry Orne Rider (sometimes spelled Ryder). It's signed and dated "Henry Orne Rider 1931" in the lower left corner. Rider and Maxfield Parrish were New England contemporaries and shared many of the same influences. You may see similarities in this painting to some landscapes by Parrish, especially the saturated blue of the sky and the dramatically proportioned design. But their painting techniques were their own. Rider's untitled landscape here is a spare composition with a sense of vast space. The earth occupies over half of the picture plane and the brilliant sky is textured with only a hint of clouds. Typical of pastoral landscapes, the scene is serene, depicted without any of the damaging effects of industrial progress. A dirt path leads up to the plain and solid homestead. Rider's paintings seldom come on the market and are mainly to be found in major auctions. This one was purchased in an auction last summer in Rockland, Maine. It's well presented in a lustrous frame with true gilding on solid wood. FRAME SIZE: 25 1/2" high X 29 1/2" wide x 1 5/8" deep PAINTING SIGHT SIZE: approximately 19 1/2" high x 23 1/4" wide CONDITION: Scattered paint losses, as shown in detail. Retouched across the lower section. The painting displays very well despite these flaws. HENRY ORNE RYDER (American, 1860-1943) Henry Orne Rider was born in Salem, Massachusetts, the son of a sea captain. He studied at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and at both the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Academie Julian in Paris. He is listed in several publications including Who's Who in American Art, Davenport's Art Reference, and The Artist's Bluebook. Besides his career as a painter, he also lectured and taught art. Rider is best known for his warm and deeply personal portrayals of the nearby landscapes in his Massachusetts homeland.
