Description: Dyrrhachion, Illyria | AE18 Reference: BMC 167, SNG Copenhagen 511 Date: 300-200 BCE Obverse: Laureate head of Zeus Dodona right Reverse: ΦIΛΩ-TA, to right and left of tripod within wreath, ΔYΡ below Mint: Dyrrhachion, Illyria Size: 18.2 mm Weight: 3.58 grams RARE BRONZE FROM ILLYRIA. Struck under Magistrate Philotas. This coin features Zeus Dodana, an important prophetic "version" of Zeus. Zeus Dodana was the patron god of Dodana, the oldest oracle in the Greek world. On Dodana's antiquity, the 8th century BCE Greek writer Hesiod wrote: "There dwell men who have many sheep and many oxen, and they are in number past telling, tribes of mortal men. And there upon its border is built a city, Dodona; and Zeus loved it and appointed it to be his oracle, reverenced by men . . . And they [the doves] lived in the hollow of an oak (phêgou). From them men of earth carry away all kinds of prophecy, whosoever fares to that spot and questions the deathless god, and comes bringing gifts with good omens." Coin is in decent condition with some surface roughness and corrosion. Dyrrhachion (also known as Epidamnos, Dyrrhachium or Durazzo) is an ancient city located on the Adriatic coast in the western part of modern Albania. It was founded as Epidamnos in the 7th century BCE and developed into an important commercial hub during the Illyrian, Greek, and Roman periods.
