Description: PLEASE NOTE THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE EVER OFFERED ANY SIGNED PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE WWII VETERANS WHO INSPIRED HBO’S THE PACIFIC. Please note that these 4x6 photographs were printed in the early 2000's then personally autographed by that veteran. This auction is for the following autographed 4x6 photograph of Ray Elnar who was the inspiration of HBO’s The Pacific ten part miniseries. BIO: Ray Elnar WWII Iwo Jima 27th Marine Reg., 5th Marine Div. H and S Company. On February 20th, 1945 Elnar and Jay Young were ordered to pick up the bodies of Marines who were killed on the first day and transport them a short distance to a dirt road. Six by six trucks then picked them up and took them to the beach for processing and burial. The first body that Young and Elnar picked up was John Basilone. Elnar was wounded in action on March 11th on Iwo Jima. The exploits of his company were immortalized in the book and The Pacific and the 10 part HBO The Pacific miniseries by the same name. HBO’s “The Pacific” ten part miniseries BACKGROUND HBO’s ten part miniseries titled “The Pacific” was Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg part two or companion piece of the popular HBO miniseries “Band of Brothers”. HBO’s “The Pacific” can currently be viewed on Netflix, Amazon, YouTube, HBO and many other streaming services. The Pacific miniseries features the USMC 1st Marine Division's battles in the Pacific; such as Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, Peleliu, and Okinawa, as well as Basilone's involvement in the Battle of Iwo Jima. Steven Spielberg has been quoted saying that “The Pacific” was significantly more challenging to produce and tell the story of WWII in the Pacific compared to that of the Band of Brothers. Whereas the Band of Brothers was able to follow just one companies service; that of Easy Company of the 506th PIR from Currahee through the conclusion of WWII in Europe. The Pacific was significantly more challenging in order to tell the story and horrifically bloody battles of WWII in the Pacific HBO had to use the stories of four different USMC veterans stories to accurately tell the entire history of the Battles of the Pacific Theater of Operations as The Pacific War was composed of significantly more battles making it impossible to use just one unit as was done in the Band of Brothers. However HBO The Pacific miniseries went through the same painstaking process of using the real names of the actually WWII veterans who are portrayed in The Pacific just as they did in the Band of Brothers. HBO’s ten part miniseries “The Pacific” focuses on the USMC experiences of the veterans who served in the same companies with Robert Leckie (H/2/1) How Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division, Eugene Sledge (K/3/5) K Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, Chuck Tatum (B/1/7) Baker Company, 1st Battalion, 27th Marines, 5th Marine Division and John Basilone (B/1/7) Baker Company, 1st Battalion, 27th Marines, 5th Marine Division and C Company, 1st Battalion, 27th Marines, 5th Marine Division of the USMC’s 1st Marine Division.
