In December, they reached Lake Namtso, the men and animals exhausted and their supplies run out after a journey that had taken them three months longer than anticipated. The authorities refused them permission to enter Lhasa and ordered them to turn back, in spite of the bitter cold and lack of supplies" (Wikipedia). De Rhins perished in an ambush the following summer, and Grenard returned to make his report, the first French edition of which appeared in 1897. This was followed by an abridged account for the general population, published in French and English in the same year, 1904.
