The " Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds " ( Watsonville ) -- Watsonville ?? ... or ... Grass Valley ?? Ha ! See what I mean ? And, if you're are well in-the-know here ... then you are already well-aware of this Timeless ! Dead Fan debate ! You know ... one of those Fiiiiiinnnneee - Parking Lot type debates ( usually with a Sierra Pale in hand ! ) - anxiously & intensely discussing just Which-One !?! of these " Hottest-of-the-Hot ! " September '83 Shows was ... " The Best " !!? I mean the Band played Seventeen ( 17 ) Shows on the '83 Late-Summer / Fall-Tour stretch - at The Frost ! - Portland ( Oregon ! ) - Seattle - Eugene ( The-Euge !! ) - Boise - Park West UT - Red Rocks - Santa Fe - Manor Downs ( Austin, TX ) ... and then - a week later, and then another week-later ... both ! Grass Valley ! & Watsonville ! I mean this G.D. run was-really the " Dream-run " as far as the Venues go, and the Places ! played ... in the West ! But, for what ever reason ( good-reason ! ... Ha !! ) - these two Grass Valley & Watsonville Shows have strangely ( or, not-strangely ... :-) ) out-shadowed the rest ! With the exception of say, maybe Red Rocks - or, the Frost ! ... though, at the same-time - I'd personally take Eugene at The Hult ! Ha ! Alright ... trying to not get silly here, and all. But really, as this is no-joke at all. As the Band Completely-Smoked !!! the 9/18 ( Grass Valley ) & 9/24 ( Watsonville ) Shows - and the real fact of the matter is ... at least to my humble Dead Fan ears ... is that it was the ' availability ' of the laid-back West Coast ( Amazing! outdoor & intimate Venue scene ) which really allowed for-this. As the Band could work at their own-pace, and things happened real-fast ... next thing there was G.D. Lightning ! - because as we all know ... that when there is Smoke ! - the Fire !!! isn't too far behind. And yep, of course ... as it is indeed Garcia-Fire !!! that we are talking about here Fans, as you are already likely in the know. Jack Straw - Minglewood - Bucket ! - Let It Grow !! - Touch > Samson ! - Other One !!! - Sugar Mag = Grass Valley. And, as for Watsonville - here indeed is the tale of the tape on the Heat ! = Alabama > Promised ! - Bird Song !! - Bucket - Deep Elm ! - China > Rider !!! - Truckin' > Drums / Space > Uncle John's !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I for one ... have been so ! back & forth over the years on my personal-call. But, for about 5 to 7-ish years now, and the the presence of the China > Rider ! & possibly one of the Meanest !!! Uncle John's Band Outro-Jams of All-Time ?!!! I'm going, and I've been going ... " Watsonville ". And, in just about the 5-Years prior - it was " Grass Valley " for me ... with that No-Prisoners Phil Attack ! on the Other One !!! Because I mean after all ... each ! Show did get the Bucket !!! Yeah ! I actually just about burnt my '83 Nak though, spinning this Watsonville Set II - just like a year ago !! I really do think that This ! Uncle's Johns does deliver & wear the Crown ... but wow - what a tough-fight ! And hey, I mean it's not like it's even anywhere close ! to " over ". Start listening, you tell me ... and frame this " Grass Valley '83 " Tix right next to Your ! Stereo system - because after you listen-good to this Show, you'll want to anyways. Hey, and the simple-fact of " Grass Valley " is too - that in Summer '83 ... the Jerry Garcia Band delivered their Hottest !
