Description: VINTAGE ANTIQUE POSTCARDS Grand Canyon National Park~1932~art deco souvenir postcard folder~18 images~cover is colorful stunning watercolor or woodcut by Fred Geary~Fred Harvey hotels Postmarked: June 1932 Published by: Fred HarveyBorn in Clarence in 1894, and reared in Carrollton, Missouri, Fred Geary worked as a commercial artist for nearly thirty years at the Fred Harvey Company in Kansas City and was celebrated as a woodcut artist. Known as a painter and block printer, Geary studied at Jewell College in Kansas City followed by the Kansas City Art Institute. Geary was responsible for the sand painting design mural at the El Navajo Hotel in Gallup, New Mexico. He was a member of the Kansas City Woodcut Society, and some of the venues to feature his work included the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Fred Geary was in charge of art and decorating for the Fred Harvey restaurant system of the Santa Fe Railroad. His colorful and graphic style was influenced by the art deco movement, as well as Native American, Mexican, and Hispanic art. His printmaking style is characterized by dramatic black shadows and silhouettes, as well as complex linear patterns that model form. Geary also illustrated for a magazine titled Navajo Medicine Man and made pictographs at Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Fifty of his wood engravings are in the Library of Congress.
