Known as a painter and block printer, Geary studied at Jewell College in Kansas City followed by the Kansas City Art Institute. Geary was responsible for the sand painting design mural at the El Navajo Hotel in Gallup, New Mexico. He was a member of the Kansas City Woodcut Society, and some of the venues to feature his work included the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Fred Geary was in charge of art and decorating for the Fred Harvey restaurant system of the Santa Fe Railroad. His colorful and graphic style was influenced by the art deco movement, as well as Native American, Mexican, and Hispanic art. His printmaking style is characterized by dramatic black shadows and silhouettes, as well as complex linear patterns that model form. Geary also illustrated for a magazine titled Navajo Medicine Man and made pictographs at Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Fifty of his wood engravings are in the Library of Congress.
