This listing is for a beautiful vintage Gorham Sterling Silver compote #700 with engraved pedestal stem.This lovely compote is decorated with an elegantly embossed design around the upper rim and a matching design just above the base. The pedestal stem is embossed with elongated stylized leaves and the base is weighted for stability. There is a fancy 3-letter monogram "M L S" in center of bowl. Marked on base "Black, Starr & Frost, Gorham, Sterling, 700" and also has the trademark stamp for the Matthews Company. Measures 6 1/2" high with a 6 1/2" diameter top and a 3 3/8" diameter base. Weighs 295 grams. The silver is in excellent Estate condition with no noted flaws. The Black, Starr & Frost Company of New York NY has been in business since 1874. They were makers and retailers of excellent quality silver hollow ware. The Matthews Company of Newark NJ also made fine quality silver hollow ware and was in business from 1907-1936 and the Gorham Company has always been know for their quality silver flatware and hollow ware.
