Description: Crownfield China Company was a noted ceramics manufacturer based in Staffordshire, England. Staffordshire, particularly Stoke-on-Trent, is renowned for its pottery industry, which has been a major center for ceramics production since the early 18th century. Crownfield China, like many other firms in the region, contributed to Staffordshire's reputation for high-quality pottery and porcelain. The company produced a range of ceramic products, including tableware, decorative items, and possibly more specialized pieces. The designs and patterns used by Crownfield China would have reflected the popular styles of the time, often drawing on traditional English motifs as well as influences from broader European and Asian ceramic traditions. Staffordshire's prominence in the ceramics industry is largely due to its abundant local clay resources, which are ideal for pottery, as well as the presence of skilled artisans and the development of various technical innovations over the centuries. The region’s manufacturers, including Crownfield China, benefitted from this rich heritage and contributed to the global reputation of English ceramics. Staffordshire pottery companies that produced notable patterns such as “calico” generally operated in the 19th and early 20th centuries, which was a peak period for the industry. The calico pattern, a popular design characterized by intricate floral motifs, was part of a broader trend of decorative styles that were inspired by traditional printed textiles and ceramics from Asia. The use of the water pitcher and washbowl, also known as a ewer and basin set, became widespread in Europe during the 18th century and continued into the early 20th century. These items were essential for personal hygiene before the advent of indoor plumbing. In medieval Europe, personal hygiene was relatively rudimentary. People used basins and ewers, but these were often quite simple and used primarily by the wealthy. By the 17th century, as domestic life and personal hygiene became more refined, the use of ewers and basins started to spread among the middle classes. The 18th century saw a significant increase in the production and use of these items. With the rise of porcelain and earthenware production, ewer and basin sets became more ornate and widely available. They became standard in the bedrooms of the affluent as a part of the dressing table set. The Victorian era (1837-1901) saw the peak of their popularity. With the Industrial Revolution, the production of ceramics increased, making such items more affordable and common in middle-class households. The designs became increasingly elaborate, reflecting the Victorian taste for ornamentation. The use of water pitchers and washbowls began to decline with the advent of indoor plumbing and the widespread installation of sinks and taps in homes. By the mid-20th century, they were largely obsolete, though they remain collectible antiques today. This is a beautiful, highly collectible, vintage set. Both pieces are large and in excellent condition. The washbowl weighs approximately 5 pounds and is four and three-quarter inches high and 14 and three-quarter inches wide. The pitcher weighs approximately 6 pounds. From the tip to the handle, its’ width is 8 inches. It is 11 1/2 inches tall. There is some crazing visible on the bottom of the pitcher. Please see photos.
