Apart from a brief introduction, the photos tell the story and there more than 300 of them, all black and white covering her film career mixed in with portraits and candid shots. The first ninety pages are devoted to portraits from the silent days through to the mid-sixties with emphasis on "her fabulous face". A brief section is devoted to "behind the scenes" and includes some family photos. The rest, some 165 pages, is a listing of all her films plus television appearances with extensive stills. The index of films, by noted screenwriter and film historian De Witt Bodeen, lists everything from "The Fable of Elvira & Farina & The Meal Ticket" (1915) through to "Nero's Mistress" (1962) with most films getting a cast list and brief synopsis included. This is far from a glamorous publication and these A.S. Barnes books of the 60s and 70s were no great works of art and devoid of much style but they were excellent reference works which helped fill the void of the limited number of good film books about at that time. When you delve into this book, I think you will be surprised how much interesting material is actually contained and of course, the photos are a feast for collectors, especially the ones from Swanson's silent film days.
