With 21 movable parts and loads of detailed accessories, "America's Movable Fighting Man" quickly became a sensation and a new way to play for boys across the nation and around the world. His name is derived from the usage of "GI Joe" for the generic U.S. soldier. The development of the GI Joe toy line led to the coining of the term "action figure" (not a doll!). GI Joe's appeal to boys has made it an American classic among toys, having been named Toy of the Century by The Children's Museum of Indianapolis in 2012, when over 24,000 folks, young and old, voted for their favorite toy of the last century. To commemorate the 40th Anniversary of America's greatest toy soldier, GI Joe, Hasbro began releasing large box sets that included a boxed 12 inch action figure from one of the four Armed Services (Action Soldier, Action Marine, Action Pilot and Action Sailor) and related uniform and accessory sets. The 40th packaging (including the related uniform and accessory sets) were nearly identical to the original items. This auction is for one GI Joe 40th Anniversary Scuba accessory set (beautiful window box - no figure included) from the Action Sailor Series. The Frogman set includes 3 piece scuba suit, swim fins, face mask, scuba tanks, depth gauge, dynamite, knife, scabbard and US Navy field manual. This uniform set was released in Wave 1, as part of Series 2. This equipment set was originally issued by Hasbro in 1964-1965. I have included a picture (the last pic of my listing) from James DeSimone's book, "The New Official Identification Guide To GI Joe 1964-1978", which is my go to GI Joe bible. James lists the Frogman Underwater Demolition as number 28 on page 4. Please compare what was originally issued by Hasbro in 1964, to what was issued by Hasbro in 2004. I find it amazing that Hasbro was able to recreate these phenomonal sets so accurately. Any newbie to GI Joe, or any veteran collector, can re-live the feeling that boys felt when they got their first GI Joe and were able to dress him with different equipment. I received my first Joe in 1965 when I was 11 years old, and I can tell you that there was no greater feeling of joy, than when I played with GI Joe and dressed him in different uniforms. I am not alone, as there are millions of boys who love GI Joe and his many incarnations to this day. This will make a wonderful gift for a pre-teen boy! This window box set have never been opened and contents have never been handled, or played with, in any way. The contents are 100% mint. The Frogman equipment window box is in nice condition with two small "kinks" on front face of widow box. Having said this, item still displays beautifully. Please be aware that the string holding the scuba suit around the waist has deteriorated. The suit is still firmly held in place by original string on the arm and legs. All the equipment is still secured.
