Description: German WW2 Soldier Death Cards Dec 1944, Original Qty 2 Sgt East/West Fronts WWII Death Cards for Siegfried Rottenfusser, Sergeant in a Gren. Regmt. (Grenadier Regiment of the Wehrmacht)It states he previously earned a wounded badge in silver, and he fought both in the East against Russia and in the West.Each card has an Iron Cross, but we do not know if he earned that or if that is standard imagery for WWII German death cards.It states he died near Sillingen in the Saar region. Fierce fighting took place there in the winter of 1944-1945.The poem/writing has a line something to the effect of "your grave in a distant enemy country"One card has a picture of the fallen soldier on the front, the other has artwork of a helmet and cross with the phrase "Ewig ist der Toten Tatenruhm!" ("Eternal is the glory of the dead!")Just under 3" x 4-1/8" Siegfried's family moved to the U.S.A. years after the war and his son ended up in Southern California. We obtained a few of these original paper cards from a neighbor of the son after his passing. Used, as-is. Mild water stains, edge nicks, aged. See attached pictures.
