GENE TUNNEY - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 02/09/1956 - HFSID 52266 GENE TUNNEY To the author of a forthcoming article on Tunney in Look magazine, the former boxing champ laments the poor state of physical fitness among American youth, and recommends federally supervised, compulsory physical education as a remedy. Typed Letter signed: "Gene", 1p, 7¼x10½. New York, N.Y., 1956 February 9. On letterhead of the McCandless Corporation to Tim Cohane, LOOK Magazine, New York, N.Y. In full: "I am sending a little copy. You can take whatever you want from it, or all, to go with your article. If however, your Editors, in their professional view, think your article on the greatest 'Irish Champion' ever born in New York City won't sell -- kill it. I am a business man, too. Remember, 'Look' approached me. Sincerely". The page contains many doodles and notations, apparently in Cohane's hand. Except for the circling of Tunney's corporate phone number, none have obvious relationship to Tunney or his letter. The name of William Faulkner has been written several times. Accompanied by a 2-page, untitled and unsigned, manuscript submitted by Tunney with the TLS (8½x11), dated 1956 February 8. In it, Tunney laments that American contemporary youth have don't get enough exercise and are less physically fit than their European counterparts. To remedy the situation, Tunney calls for creation of a Physical Fitness Division within the federal government to coordinate development of compulsory physical education programs and of adequate facilities for them. Gene Tunney (1897-1978) captured the world heavyweight boxing crown by defeating Jack Dempsey in a unanimous 10-round decision (1926), won a 10-round rematch after coming back from a controversial long count (1927), picked up one more easy purse and then retired (1928). The highly literate and articulate Tunney served on the boards of several corporations. During World War II, he was director of athletics and fitness for the U.S. Navy. His son John was a Senator from California (1971-1977). The July 10, 1956 edition of Look magazine contains an article by Tim Cohane titled, "Gene Tunney Today." In addition to the ink notations, Tunney's TLS has mailing folds, staple holes in upper left corner, and is slightly soiled. The unsigned Tunney manuscript has light corner creases, and staple holes in upper left. Overall, fine condition.
