Balthus (Balthasar Klossowski de Rola)Born February 29 1908 Paris France Died February 18, 2001 SwitzerlandBalthus was born in Paris, his father was a painter and art historian and mother also a painter. He was best known for his controversial art portraying adolescent girls. Growing up his house was often frequented by arts and writers of the day. He was also surrounded by art and artists. His parents separated in 1917 he moved to Geniva with his mother and brother. During his teenage years he lived in Berlin and Switzerland. At 16 he returned to Paris to study Old Masters at the Louvre, then moved to Tuscany Italy at frescoes at Quattrocento. Painting in the classical style he studied his work was laced with eroticism. His first was in 1934 at Galerie Pierre in Paris. 1961 he was appointed director of the Academie de France at the Villa Medici. 1981 he became a member of the Royal Academy of London. He died in 2001.
