Description: Crayon manner etching by Gilles Demarteau (French, 1722-1776) after a drawing by François Boucher (French, 1703-1770). The plate depicts a courting couple in a bucolic landscape and the plate was executed by Demarteau in the 3rd quarter of the 18th century. In three colors, it is printed in brown, buff and sanguine ink on cream colored laid paper. Although the paper could be 18th century, I suspect this is a somewhat later impression. It measures 9 3/4 x 7 3/4 inches, the sheet size is 12 1/2 x 9 inches with a deckle edge at the bottom. Aside from a bit of handling grime to the reverse, it is in excellent condition. Gilles Demarteau or Gilles Demarteau the Elder (19 January 1722, in Liège – 31 July 1776, in Paris) was an etcher, engraver and publisher who was active in Paris for his entire career.[1] He is one of the persons to whom has been attributed the invention of the crayon manner of engraving. He is recognized as playing an important role in the development of this engraving technique. He was one of the key reproductive engravers and publishers of the work of François Boucher.
