Isaac Bashevis Singer, was born in 1904 near Warsaw, POLAND, the son of Jews. Singer was awarded the NOBEL PRIZE for Literature in 1978 for his "impassioned narratives with roots in a Polish-Jewish cultural tradition. In "The Gentleman from Cracow," a whole town meets its nemesis when it succumbs to the temptation of a stranger. There is a terrible drought in the small village of Frampol. The townspeople have no crops and no money to buy food. One day a stranger appears, wearing a savle hat, silver buckled shoes, and a green silk sash. When he offers wagonloads of food to the poor, the townspeople rejoice, and the parents of young girls all want him to marry their daughters. The stranger demads that a ball be held; there, he will choose a bride. The gentleman reveals that he is the wealthiest man in the world and that he will become th town's benefactor if every girl in the town marries before midnight. Old people admonish their children that such hurried marriages may bring dire results but their warning are ignored. Lots are drawn to match brides and grooms; people shriek and dance with joy; a blood-red moon rises in a sky already filled with crimson clouds, then the sky darkens. An apocalypse is at hand. . ."Gimpel the Fool" is the baker and townspeople have played tricks on him because he is so easily duped. He says he had seven names in all: "imbecile, donkey, flax-head, dope, glump, ninny, and fool. The last name stuck. The gang laughed and chanted and heehawed, stomped and danced." The rabbi stops eating, studying, writing and refuses to leave his house. . .but ultimately he realizes that faith depends on the existence of free choice. Other stories include: "The Wife Killer," "By the Light of memorial Candles," "The Mirror," "The Little Shoemakers," "Joy," "From the Diary of One Not Born," "The Old Man," "Fire," and "The Unseen." 233 pages, including a Glossary.
