Asher Miller, who lived from 1915 – 2005, was a prolific American playwright, essayist, and prominent figure in twentieth-century American theatre. This volume includes: "Introduction to the Collected Plays,"---50 pages of Miller's comments and analysis--- and his major dramas: "All My Sons," "Death of a Salesman," "The Crucible," "A View from the Bridge, and "A Memory of Two Mondays." Miller was born in Harlem of Polish Jewish parents. In the Wall Street Crash on 1929, the family lost almost everything. As a teenager, Miller delivered bread every morning before school to help the family. After graduating high school in 1932 he worked at several menial jobs to pay for his college tuition before enrolling at the UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN where he began writing plays. Miller retained strong ties to his alma mater throughout the rest of his life. After his graduation in 1938, he joined the Federal Theatre Project, a NEW DEAL agency established to provide jobs in the theater. In 1940, Miller married Mary Grace Slattery and they became parents to two children. Miller was exempted from military service during World War II because of a high-school football injury injury to his left kneecap. 1940 was also the year his first play was produced; "The Man Who Had All the Luck" won the Theatre Guild's National Award. In 1947, Miller's play "All My Sons" was a success on BROADWAY, earning him his first TONY AWARD and his reputation as a playwright was established. In 1948, Miller wrote "Death of a Salesman" and the play premiered on Broadway on February 10, 1949, directed by ELIA KAZAN, and starring Lee J. Cobb as Willy Loman and Mildred Dunnock as Linda. The play was commercially successful and critically acclaimed, winning a numerous award, including the New York Drama Critics' Award and the Pulitzer Prize. The play was performed 742 times. In 1955, Miller's "A View from the Bridge" opened on Broadway. In 1956, Miller married MARILYN MONROE. Miller was subpoenaed by the HUAC. Miller wrote the screenplay "The Misfits" and Marilyn Monroe was given the leading role. In 1961, Miller and Monroe divorced after their five years of marriage. Nineteen months later, Monroe died of a likely drug overdose. 437 pages. I offer Combined shipping.
