In his early career he worked as an illustrator and wood engraver, working for newspapers and magazines. He was fascinated by Hollywood and silent movies and produced a large body of work using this as his inspiration. In 1953 he joined Camberwell School as a teacher of etching and engraving, going on to become a Senior Lecturer in Graphic Design and Head of the Department of Graphic Arts 1976-80. A book on his art called Hollywood-Continental was published in 1988.
