Description: This is a reproduction of V. Zveg's The Battle of the Chesapeake. The Battle of the Chesapeake, also known as the Battle of the Virginia Capes was a crucial naval battle in the American Revolutionary War. September of 1781, Washington had British troops surrounded in a siege at Yorktown. A British fleet from New York led by Rear Admiral Sir Thomas Graves was sent to help Cornwallis. A French fleet led by Rear Admiral François Joseph Paul, the Comte de Grasse, got to the Chesapeake first and engaged the British. The battle was won by the French, and prevented the Royal Navy from reinforcing or evacuating the besieged forces of Lieutenant General Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown, effectively securing independence for the Thirteen Colonies.
