Description: This is a 3D printed and balsa folding wing glider inspired by the Jim Walker Interceptor airplane design. The design has been optimized for weight distribution and good flying characteristics. These are heavier than the 100% balsa Interceptors and therefore do not glide quite as far, but they are still great flyers and a lot of fun.History of the project: I am a collector of vintage balsa ready-to-fly gliders with a focus on the Jim Walker/American Junior planes. Of course the best thing about toys like this is playing with them, but it would be crazy to actually use those vintage planes so I began making some by hand. Cutting the balsa profile and the aluminum wing clips was time consuming so I used my experience with 3D printing and CAD design to create most of the parts using a 3D printer. Early designs used plastic wings and stabilizers, but their performance was poor due to weight. Slimming down the fuselage and using balsa for the wings and stabilizer provided the most comparable flights to all balsa planes.Jim Walker's design is one of the best ready-to-fly glider designs ever made. I hope that making these gliders available will help introduce a new generation of children to the fun of flying a plane that goes up like a rocket and glides down like a plane.More colors are coming soon.
