The pictures were taken under a short wave (254nm) 4-watt lamp that I am sure does not do this specimen any justice. If you have a stronger lamp, you will without a doubt get a brighter response from the specimen. Mineralogical Info: Willemite is a zinc silicate mineral (Zn2SiO4) and a minor ore of zinc. It is highly fluorescent (green) under shortwave ultraviolet light.Calcite fluoresces an orange-red or pink from this location. Fluorescent Mineral Info: Fluorescent minerals are minerals that emit visible light when activated by invisible ultraviolet light. Certain electrons and chemicals in the minerals absorb the energy from these ultraviolet light sources and jump to a higher energy state. The mineral glows when those electrons jump down to a lower energy. There are two kinds of ultraviolet light: longwave and shortwave. Longwave Ultraviolet light is also known as "black light."
