Faber & Faber Ltd., London, May 1950. 1st edition, 1st impressionComedy in 3 Acts and Appendix reproducing the original cast of the first production.The play was first performed at the Edinburgh Festival in August 1949 where Alec Guinness made its debut and on Broadway, New York the following January. "The Cocktail Party" won the 1950 Tony Award for best comedy and was praised as "a major event in theatre" (Time).The volume is a first edition with the printing error on page 29, line 1, where "here" is reported instead of "her", subsequently corrected. Several changes were subsequently made to the text. Included is an original cast list and sheet music for the song "One Eyed Riley".This lot includes the program for 3 May 1950 at the New Theatre, St Martin's Lane (London) and a ticket for a performance dated 26 December 1950.Hard cover in green cloth with gilt lettering on the spine. Has some fading to the top and back. The ends are slightly bumped. The content is clean but page 29 has a yellowing due to the insertion of a newspaper article of the time (The Listener – June 29, 1950) which mentions the printing error “I commend to the curious a puzzling example on page 29 of some – only some – of the copies of the first edition..”. The original dust jacket is present, with some stains, but intact and complete with the price tag. Proprietary name on the first endpaper and some small annotations on page 29.
