Description: For collectors of vintage bookends in a rustic style, up for auction is a pair of vintage heavy metal bookends, possibly by Bradley & Hubbard of Meriden, Connecticut, though I can't be certain of this. Depicted on the front of each piece is an elaborate old fireplace, complete with andirons, logs, and a row of books displayed at the top. My guess is they're made of cast-iron, which has been given a lustrous, almost coppery sheen on parts of the hearth (unfortunately, it's hard to get this to show very well on a photograph). I think the bookends likely date from the first quarter of the 20th century, give or take. FYI, Bradley & Hubbard was founded in 1852 and went out of business in 1940. Each bookend measures 6 inches wide by 5 inches high, and their depth is a little under 2 inches. Each one weighs nearly 2-1/2 pounds. There are no maker's marks anywhere on the pieces. The overall condition of the two vintage metal bookends is good, considering their age. The fireplaces on both look quite good, though they could likely do with some cleaning (note that I've only dusted the pieces, not attempted to get them to shine). The bottoms, undersides, and backs of the pieces aren't in the best shape, with some rubbing, wear, and green patination here and there. As well, some of what appears to be felt or something similar on the undersides has come away considerably on one of the bookends and should possibly be replaced on both, in order not to damage the surface on which the bookends are placed. There are no cracked or broken bits, as far as I can tell, and the bookends have neither a musty nor smoky odor. These vintage, possibly antique, cast-iron bookends are being sold AS IS, AS DESCRIBED ABOVE AND PICTURED WITHIN. I am setting what I feel is a very reasonable starting price for the auction, and there is NO RESERVE. I am also including a Buy It Now price. Shipping and handling for the bookends, which will be well-wrapped and sent in a cardboard box, can be either by USPS Ground Advantage or USPS Priority Mail, whichever you choose, and will be $CALCULATED to U.S. addresses. Note that eBay is now instituting a shipping program whereby those from outside the U.S. can bid on all sellers' items, and the seller sends everything to an eBay facility in the U.S. for shipping. I will do my best to send these bookends out to you no more than 2-3 business days following receipt of payment (that is, when eBay informs me that your payment has been posted to or otherwise cleared in my account). If you are the winner or buyer of these bookends, PAYMENT IS EXPECTED WITHIN ONE WEEK (7 DAYS) FROM THE PURCHASE DATE. If you cannot pay within this time frame, PLEASE contact me asap so we can work something out. I'm very flexible and understanding, but I would appreciate communication from you one way or another. PLEASE NOTE THAT RETURNS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED NOR REFUNDS MADE FOR THIS PAIR OF FIREPLACE BOOKENDS, SO PLEASE READ MY DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY, LOOK CLOSELY AT THE PHOTOGRAPHS I’VE UPLOADED, AND ASK ME ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE ABOUT THE ITEMS. THANKS FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING! Thanks for looking, and please don't hesitate to email me if you have any questions about these handsome vintage bookends, which are likely made of cast-iron and are possibly by Bradley & Hubbard of Meriden, Connecticut. NOTE THAT, IF APPLICABLE, eBAY WILL ADD ANY APPROPRIATE STATE SALES TAX TO THE INVOICE.
