Description: The base to a Federal 10lb Parrott artillery shell excavated on the Cedar Mountain Battlefield, Shenandoah Valley, Virginia. The base has the brass sabot which shows the rifling of the field piece This type shell was for use with the 3” Parrott or the 3” Ordnance Rifle. Originally known as the "Griffen Gun," after its designer, John Griffen. The Model 1861 3” Ordnance Rifle was copied by Confederate Armories. The design of this rifle, soon a favorite with artillerists in both armies, is recognized by the complete absence of any discontinuities in the surface of the gun. The Battle of Cedar Mountain took place on August 9, 1862, in Culpeper County, Virginia. Federal forces under Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks attacked Confederate forces under Maj. Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson near Cedar Mountain as the Confederates marched on Culpeper Court House to forestall a Federal advance into central Virginia. After nearly being driven from the field in the early part of the battle, a Confederate counterattack broke the Union lines resulting in a Confederate victory. The battle was the first combat of the Northern Virginia campaign. It comes as shown, the stand is included. The fragment is 3”; it has been treated and sealed.
