ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Beautiful & Ultra Rare Antique 18th Century 1786 Sepia/Brown-toned Mixed-method Mezzotint & Etching of a Semi-nude Scene From William Shakespeare’s circa 1611 Play Cymbeline, titled “Imogen’s Chamber” (AKA “Imogen's Bedchamber in Cymbeline's Palace, ‘Cymbeline,’ Act II, Scene II”, or “Imogen lying asleep (Cymbeline)”), by the world famous listed historical engraver, etcher & painter ‘Francesco Bartolozzi, R.A.’ (Italian, 1727-1815), after the original painting by the listed historical painter & typographer ‘William Martin’ (British, 1753-c.1836). Print & Publisher Info: The painter's name, ‘W. Martin inv. et pinx.’, appears printed very tiny lower left just under the image in the plate margin area, and the engraver info, ‘F. Bartolozzi Sculps. 1786.’, appears lower right respectively. Bartolozzi is one of the most famous and sought after engravers of the 18th Century and he even contributed a number of plates to Boydell’s Graphic Illustrations of the Dramatic Works of Shakespeare (1791-1804), and William Martin along with English printer & typographer William Bulmer (1757-1830) developed and cut the new typeface specifically for the edition. What is also interesting is that in December, 1789, Martin sent Josiah Boydell (nephew & business partner of John Boydell) a letter asking for Boydell's opinion regarding two paintings from the plays of Shakespeare that he had in progress. The outer margins & part of the plate margins of the etching were trimmed back a very long time ago, either because it had been previously framed perhaps a long time ago, or was done possibly in preparation for framing (not sure) and there was other printed text info on the piece that subsequently was trimmed off in the process and would have read, ‘Pubd. as the Act direts [sic] May 22, 1786.’ This particular etching is listed as ‘No. 234’ in the book, Bartolozzi and His Works: A Biographical and Descriptive Account of the Life and Career of Francesco Bartolozzi, R.A., by Andrew White Tuer, Vol. II, London, 1885. Bartolozzi also engraved three other works by Martin during his career to include; “Edward and Eleanora” (Tuer 223), “The Death of Lady Jane Grey” (Tuer 1212), and “Iachimo in Imogen’s Chamber” (Tuer 235). The Etching is on a medium-heavier weight cream-colored laid paper stock. In the Play: Cymbeline is King of Britain; Imogen, Cymbeline's daughter is in love with Posthumus, but her stepmother wants Imogen to marry Cloten, the queen's son. When Imogen balks and secretly marries Posthumus, the king has him banished. Before his departure, Posthumus gives Imogen a bracelet, and she gives him a ring. Posthumus arrives in Rome, where he brags of his wife's beauty and fidelity. When Iachimo questions this, he and Posthumus propose a wager that Iachimo can't seduce Imogen. Iachimo hastens to Britain, where he is rebuffed several times by Imogen. Iachimo, still striving for Imogen, is nothing if not crafty. The rogue hides in a chest carried into Imogen's room, then steals her bracelet while she sleeps. He also takes note of a mole not easily seen. Armed with detail and her bracelet, Iachimo tells Posthumus that he has won the bet, whereupon Posthumus gives up the ring that Imogen gave him. Posthumus, considerably peeved at Imogen, sends a letter to Britain instructing Pisanio to kill her for him. Pisanio instead warns Imogen of the anger of Posthumus, and Imogen flees Cymbeline's court disguised as a page. He also gives the potion, which he believes is a “sovereign restorative,” to Imogen (Source: bardweb, Shakespeare Resource Center, “Cymbeline”). Size & Condition: The size with small margins is 9-9/16” x 13-7/8”, Image size is 8-5/8” x 13-1/4”. The Etching is in Good Rare+ condition for its antique 18th C. age. This piece has been in a drawer amongst other etchings & engravings since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time. There is even light foxing & staining over the entire sheet but does not view badly at all and is somewhat tough to make out amidst the etching & linework itself—the image shows very strongly with crisp linework, tones & detail. There are only two very tiny outer plate/margin edge tears (1/8” & 3/16”) on the left edge middle & lower-left, that do not reach the image area and are completely negligible since the outer margin can easily be matted & framed out. There is one larger crease that runs top-to-bottom on the left side which is also tough to make out amidst the etching image itself and doesn’t really show at all from the front, and sort of looks like an original paper flaw scrunch-crease (from the back) that was still used & printed on at the time. Other minimal slight & small crescent-creasing here & there in the image area (also not really noticeable) and in the outer margin areas and margin. There is remnants of an old paper strip along the entire back right edge, which the etching may have been lightly glued into a book or folio possibly for easily removal possibly (not sure?). Normal toning of stock from its antique age. This gorgeous antique 1786 etching would make a wonderful addition to any Bartolozzi, Shakespeare or art collection. We have had numerous problems in the past communicating with our eBayers outside of eBay because of it. COLLECTORS & DEALERS: Please DO NOT email us (inside or outside of eBay's email system) with any offers to stop an auction early.
