Description: Extremely rare copper & brass wine cooler from Carl Deffner of Esslingen, Germany. Deffner manufactured decorative copper, brass and plated tableware. He was born in 1856 and took over management of his father's metalware factory in 1900. They were both responsible for many excellent designs during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods but sadly the factory closed in 1959 This amazing wine cooler is primarily made of copper showing a strong Secessionist design on all four sides, and embellished with polished brass handles, rim and ball-shaped feet. We have only ever come across one of these coolers previously and it came with an insert. It dates from around 1890 – 1900, the height to the rim is 23.5cm and to the top of the handles just a fraction below 26cm, with the width between the handles 38cm. Its marked to the underside with the usual Carl Deffner initials and crossed halberds inside a shield and embossed with a letter K. (Perhaps for Karl) This item is in excellent condition for its age with just a few very minor surface marks or dinks here and there, but the overall patina is amazing which only adds to the overall Art Nouveau design and appeal.
