Waterford Crystal is the brand name of beautiful crystal glassware and other crystal items. Its roots go back to Waterford, Ireland, beginning in the year 1793. Today, Waterford crystal is still produced and the company is a part of WWRD Holdings Ltd. (bought in 2015 by Fiskars Corp.) that also produces products by Wedgwood and Royal Doulton.Knowing How to Determine the Quality of Waterford CrystalIs a cord or line in crystal a flaw? No. A line or cord is not considered a flaw. This almost invisible difference in the density of the crystal occurs during the fusing of molten crystal. Although visible when it reflects light, the cord disappears when a goblet or vase is filled with water.Does a seed or bubble in crystal constitute a flaw? Tiny bubbles the size of a pinpoint sometimes will form in the fusing or melting process and do not affect the quality of the piece. Such slight variations are natural results of handcrafting. How to Identify Waterford CrystalTo identify Waterford crystal, hold the item up the light and use a magnifying glass to locate an acid stamp that says “Waterford." Alternatively, if the item was made after 2000, look for an acid stamp in the shape of a seahorse. You can also look for a gold sticker featuring Waterford's green seahorse emblem.Caring for Your Waterford Crystal Crystal and Glass should be hand washed separately in warm soapy water, rinsed thoroughly and dried with a lint free cloth. When washing and drying do not twist the bowl in the opposite direction of the stem as this can cause damage. Dishwasher heat, friction and detergent can dull or scratch the surface. Extreme temperatures can crack or break your crystal/glass. Avoid pouring hot liquids into cold crystal/glass, or very cold liquids into warm crystal /glass. Do not use crystal or glass in a microwave or conventional oven. The finely made rims are the most fragile part of your product. Do not turn upside down while drying or storing.
