Description: Name: Euproops danae (Horseshoe Crab) Age: Pennsylvanian Formation: Francis Creek Shale (Mazon Creek) Location: Braidwood, IllinoisSize: Crab itself is about 1.25 inches across! We recently acquired some nice fossils from the late Joseph Butterfield Collection (NJ). We will be auctioning these fossils here over the next few weeks. This is a very collectible invertebrate fossil. It is an extremely detailed horseshoe crab, Euproops danae, from the classic Pennsylvanian Mazon Creek fauna of Illinois. This large fossil crab is unusual in that it is a SPLIT PAIR and it was FOUND IN SHALE, not the more common semi-round concretions they are almost always found in! That means this crab displays beautifully on a natural-edged matrix plate, not a concretion. The distinct crab is very prone, extremely inflated, and exhibits excellent detail. The striking fossil also has beautiful natural color and contrast preserved. Hundreds of rocks are broken open before one of these crabs is discovered, and a specimen this large and this nice is quite a find! This is a very cool and collectible split pair example of a primitive horsehoe crab FOUND IN SHALE from the Coal Age deposits of the famous Mazon Creek locality.
