They have a zipper around the knee area to quickly convert to shorts if needed. This feature was ideal when I was in Colorado hiking and going through Philmont as a Boy Scout. I had 2 pairs of “zip off” pants on my multiple week trip out west. The weight saving was a real contributor in my decision to purchase pants with the convertible feature. Just make sure that if you do go out into Bear country that you hang these with your smellables, I put all of my clothes in plastic ziplock bags to have an extra rain barrier. EVEN THOUGH IT SAYS ODORLESS ON THE TAG!!!! Put them with everything else in your pack hung up in a tree to keep you safer when you sleep. Only have your sleeping items in your tent so curious bears don’t ruin your tent and your fun hiking trip. Happy camping ⛺️
