Description: the first, Official Autograph Edition (from 1899), of "Exciting Experiences in our Wars with Spain and the Filipinos, Illustrated".fully bound in gorgeous, gilt, red leather. gilt on all 3 exposed sides of textblock, although the gilding is wearing down. written (partially) by President McKinley, who was in office at the time, with McKinley's work and others' writings and photographs compiled by FI Sheetz, and edited by Marshall Everett, ("The Greatest Descriptive Writer The World Has Ever Known", as he describes himself, while putting his name before the incumbent president's, and his portrait amongst the distinguished war heroes').signed & stamped on the inside first page by previous owner. first page also has a previous price written in pencil. hundreds of illustrations, photographs, portraits, and political cartoons.features first-hand accounts of the US's wars and skirmishes with Spain and former Spanish colonies; political history; accounts of culture and ways of life for the Spaniards, Mexicans, and various peoples of the Philippines; civil engineering, humanitarian, and military operations; a section about Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough Riders during the US's expansion into Mexican territory; propaganda and political cartoons and commentary; as well as a lot of other stuff that gives a very in depth look at warfare and culture in the 1800s, albeit from a very American point of view in everything. some wear to binding including tear to leather in bottom corner of spine. textblock tight, with occasional small tear or dogear to pages. see pics. about 10 x 7.5 x 1.5".about 500 pages. i'm going to be honest, i'm not sure what makes it an "autograph edition", as neither mine nor any other one i've seen online are inscribed by anyone. so...??? the only thing i can think of, is there's a "gallery of war heroes" section, and it has some of their signatures printed under their portraits. check out my eBay store for more old and rare books from my personal collection.
