Exceptional 1987 Miyata 1000 LT 700c Touring Bike. All Original. Ultra Low Miles

Description: I’m willing to pack and ship the bike using BikeFlights, but ask that an interested potential buyer contact me first with their zip code so I can get a price quote, and any questions or concerns someone might have about the bike should be asked before purchase, If the bike is shipped, rather than picked up, the handling time will be fairly lengthy, because it takes me quite a long time to carefully pack a bicycle, I’ll set the handling time at 5 business days, but there’s a good chance I’ll be able to do it faster than that. The 200.00 shipping price shown is to California and other distant US points. If a potential buyer sends me a specific zip code, I can quote a specific shipping price. If you want to check for yourself, the packed size and weight of the bike is approximated at 56 x 10 x 32 inches and 47 pounds. The shipping cost would be less to parts of the country nearer to Maryland. [Optional vintage used Blackburn low rider rack added, in case anyone prefers that type of rack, and wants to keep everything period correct. You can have either front rack shown, but not both. Please let me know which you would prefer.] [In case anyone is interested, the international vintage bike rides known as “Eroica” (Heroic) define the permitted bikes to take part as those built in 1987 or earlier. Since this bike has all of its original 1987 parts, as defined in the regulations, it would be eligible to use in Eroica events worldwide. Note that parts relating to safety, like tires and tubes, brake cables, brake pads, and helmets are not required to be pre-1987. Here is the statement from the organizers of Eroica California: “Historical Bikes (also called Bici Eroiche, in Italian) are all road racing bikes built in 1987 or earlier”.] [THE FIRST TWO PHOTOS ARE CURRENT ONES, showing the new brake hoods and partly installed NWT front rack, which matches the rear quite well, and will come with the bike if the buyer is interested. However, the bike wasn’t sold with a front rack, so the front rack shown would be a non-original part.] ——. FRAME MATERIALS: Cr-Mo triple butted splined tubing. Cr-Mo seat and chain stays. Miyata investment cast lugs.Forged ends. FRONT FORK: Cr-Mo tubing. Cast crown. TL forged ends. HEADSET: Italian size. OVER LOCK NUT DIMENSION: (F) 100 mm (R) 126 mm SEAT POST DIAMETER: 26.8 mm SET PARTS: AH seat pin. Rear end adjusting screws. AH bolts on bottom basements. COLOR: Steel-Blue/Silver. BRAZED-ONS: Two sets of bottle basements on down tube. One set of bottle basements on seat tube. Cable guide on bottom bracket shell. Cantilever brake bosses. Rear carrier basements. Chain hook and rear brake cable hanger on seat stay.Pump peg on head tube. Carrier basements for low mount front rack. An unusually or exceptionally well-preserved example of one of the high points of Japanese lugged steel touring bicycles. It isn’t perfect, but I think it’s safe to say that it’s in better and more original condition than at least 95% of all Miyata 1000 / One Thousand touring bikes still in existence. All parts (except the Brooks saddle in the photos, which is not included) are original, including the 37 year old Miyata radial 622-32 (700c) tires, which hardly appear to be worn, and still have some of the little rubber “nibs”. One could easily fit 35mm tires on this frame & fork, and possibly 38mm - I measured with a caliper the spacing between the fork legs and between the chainstays where the tire passes between them, and both spaces are approximately 45mm. A tire measuring 38mm in inflated width would thus leave 3.5mm clearance on either side. (It should be noted that tires aren’t always their stated width.) The Vetta saddle that came with the bike is included, which appears identical to the one in the 1987 Miyata catalog photo, and has minuscule wear of any kind. (Photo added.) Seat tube 60cm center to top; top tube 58cm center to center. 33.5 inches standover height with the current tires. When I found this bike (it's from Minnesota) some years ago, I switched the drop handlebars (and brake levers) to the upright, swept-back “North Road” type, but now that I've decided to sell the bike, I’ve reinstalled the original SR “Randonneur” handlebars and Shimano 600 levers. The handlebar padding is original as far as I know, and is still soft, which is an indication of how little time the bike has spent outside, because UV light tends to harden that type of cushioning over time. I'd keep the bike, but I have another 1000 LT with a slightly larger frame that fits me better. I still have the original SR “SP-155” pedals, but not the toe clips and black straps that I believe came with the bike when purchased new. (For what it’s worth, it would be a simple matter to find “period-correct” replacement toe clips and straps.) The original brake hoods had hardened and cracked, but I found some new black brake hoods, and they are on the way. Ukai 700c black rims with silver machined sidewalls. 40 spoke rear for carrying heavy loads, 36 spoke front. Both wheels spin true, and I’ve never had to adjust them. Original Miyata alloy rear touring rack. The bike didn’t come with a front rack, but it has front dropout eyelets and mid-fork threaded mounts for installing various rack types. I may have a black front low-rider rack that would fit the bike, and complement the rear, if the new owner is interested. I never installed a front rack previously because I never toured with the bike, and didn’t need one. Shimano Deore XT derailleurs, front and rear. Shimano triple crankset with original “Bio-Pace” chainrings. Sansin sealed bearing “Gyro-Master” wheel hubs. Minor scratches and a few tiny spots of rust. No dents or deep scratches. The decals are near-perfect. Functions normally, but now that I’ve switched the handlebars back, it will need new brake cables and black housing, which I’ve purchased and WILL BE INCLUDED with the bike. I would install them, but I’m speculating that the new owner might prefer a particular handlebar set-up, which would mean everything would have to be done over in any case. With respect to local pickup - if the buyer isn’t satisfied at pickup, the sale can be cancelled. The bike is in Western Maryland, not far from Hagerstown, but could be delivered within the Washington DC/Suburban Maryland//Northern Virginia/Baltimore area at cost if arranged prior to purchase. Listed for sale locally as well. Examine photos and feel free to ask questions. Brooks saddle in photos not included, but what I believe to be the original Vetta touring saddle will come with the bike, and is in excellent, minimally used condition. I check my messages regularly. If you’re interested in the bike, but live too far away for local pickup, feel free to contact me and we can discuss shipping options. Thanks for your interest. I’m beginning to pare down my 40 year collection of bicycles.
