Description: About this work: A wonderful 18th century (or earlier) Dutch winter landscape with ice skaters. This gem of a painting depicts a classic Dutch Golden Age winter scene with figures skating over a frozen canal and lake. The composition is anchored around a single tree at the center with birds perched atop its branches. In the foreground, a group of villagers with animals converse and go about their days. The work is oil on panel and appears to be unsigned, although painted by a clearly talented hand. It is housed in an appropriate later black frame. Stable surface craquelure commensurate with age. Small scattered spots of inpainting, primarily along edges and small area in sky. Panel slightly bowed, commensurate with age.
