Long's colorful autobiography, Every Man a King. Published only two years before his assassination with only 20,000 of the 100,000 copies sold. A rare example. To many during the Depression, Huey Long was “a political messiah… To others he was a dictator-in-waiting, described by Mencken as a backwoods Mussolini… When it came to Huey Long, who called himself ‘Kingfish,’ there was no middle ground” (New York Times). In this scarce first edition of his autobiography, Every Man a King, Long boldly tells his own story to counter the “garbled accounts of my career.” As Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and Long’s biographer, Thomas H. Williams, writes: “Long had a manuscript in final form by the summer of 1933. He asked George Allen to act as his agent in New York in dealing with printers… The first copies came off the press… in resplendent gold jackets which bore five pictures of the author. Although the work had been put together in New York, the title page carried the imprimatur of the National Book Company of New Orleans, which was the property of Long and some of his associates.” On publication, critics described Long’s autobiography as “filled with praise for himself, and denunciation for his enemies… but primarily an argument for his favorite theme—redistribution of wealth” (New York Times). Two years after publication, Long was assassinated in the lobby of the Louisiana state capitol. Condition:Binding tight with mild slant. Original full-bound cloth boards present clean and unmarked with only a few pen-sized dents to rear and a couple finger smudges. Edges show light wear with a mild bump to top front. Corner present with same but for a moderate inward bend to top front with crease and toning. Head and foot of spine show moderate wear with some creasing and age toning, also apparent at hinge corners. Spine lightly faded. Light to moderate spotting to text blocks. Internally clean and unmarked but for address and date neatly penciled to top fore-edge corner of front endpaper. Dust jacket presents fairly well with relatively bright front and rear panels showing moderate to heavy rubbing and shelf-wear. Heavy chipping to corners and head and foot of spine. More moderate wear to edges with several open and closed tears, the largest extending from top fore-edge corner toward center about one and one-half inch. Creases heavily worn with partial separation at bottom front and some loss above. Hinges moderately to heavily worn. Flaps clean and bright. Original price of $1.00 not clipped. A nice example.
