Eugene Debs Vintage Antique Photos Socialist Party Presidential Candidate 1922

Description: Amazing and rare, on-of-a-kind lot of vintage photos showing images related to Eugene Debs! Debs was the 5-time presidential candidate for the Socialist Party of America. He was imprisoned during World War 1 for speaking out against that war. While in prison, and in failing health, Debs earned almost 1 million votes for president. These are from our private collection and were obtained from newspaper outlets. Before the electronic photos stored on computers, newspapers actually kept prints in their filing cabinets for if the image was ever needed for a news story. These are the from the newspapers and on the reverse are notes and such regarding publication. 2 are about 8x10 inches and the smaller one is about 6 ½ x 8 ½ inches. The one on the right shows Debs with nurses. The back has a clipping that notes Debs suffered from insomnia and was being treated in a Chicago Sanitarium (dated 1922). I believe this is a rarely disclosed part of Debs’ life. I suspect the condition was brought on by the harsh jail sentence he got for opposing World War 1. He was not released from prison until his health had seriously deteriorated. Anyone suffering from this illness knows how awful it can be. The top left one shows Debs with a young girl: “Helga.” I don’t know what relation she was to him. Dated 1963. The photo album corner holders are part of the photo. Bottom left shows Birthplace of Eugene Victor Debs, Terre Haute, Indiana, 1885 (the photo is dated 1948). As shown. While these are vintage reprinted photos, they have the original newspaper markings/clippings on the back. Minor general wear with more to edges. Light wrinkling. Minor blemishes.
