Erte; Father of Art Deco: Romaine de Tirtoff was born Roman Petrovich Tyrtov in 1892 in St. Petersburg, Russian Empire. He died in 1990 at the age of 97. His father was a Russian Fleet Admiral, but as a young man Erte moved to Paris, France to pursue a career as a designer. In 1915 he got his substantial contract with Harper's Bazaar magazine and went on to an illustrious career that included designing costumes and stage sets.
