Description: Ernest Lawson (1873-1939) Early AutumnOil on Boardcirca 1910s to 1920s20" x 16"Signed Lower RightTitled on VersoFrame Size 26-3/4" x 22-3/4" A beautiful autumn landscape by this well-known, well-listed artist who was influenced by French Impressionism as well as the Impressionism of American artists John Henry Twachtman (1853-1902) and Julian Alden Weir (1852-1919) and the only landscape painter among "The Eight," the group of American painters who became known as the Ashcan School. Lawson often used a palette knife and heavy impasto on his paintings, and this work seems to be highly representative of this technique. The painting is in very good condition with no apparent defects and shows no in-painting under black light. It is housed in a lovely, newer gilt wood plein-air style frame that is also in very good condition. This painting has been in our private collection for years.
