Description: GEORGE III MAHOGANY SECRETARY DESK WITH GLAZED UPPER BOOKCASE England, circa 1780 | formerly with Ginsburg & Levy Item # 401HYF25Q A rich and vibrant secretary desk from the late years of the 18th century, it features a powerful molded crown in numerous levels, the thin upper molding over a greek-key dentil molding before a generous cove molding followed finally with a finely made and neatly symmetrical pierced fretwork. The doors feature 13 glazed panes each separated with astragal moldings, opening to reveal a silk upholstered interior with three adjustable shelves. In the typical manner, the slanted lid falls down on withdrawable lopers to give access to a tidy interior centered with a brilliant flamed-mahogany prospect door flanked by fluted pilasters on either side that withdraw to reveal hidden compartments. On either side of these are situated four pigeon-hole letter slots over four drawers. The lower case is comprised of four graduated full-width drawers hung with beautifully detailed sand-cast bronze pulls. The desk was formerly with the gallery of Ginsburg & Levy and still retains their labeling. We always enjoy carrying pieces that went through their hands, as they are almost without exception of exceedingly good quality. The present desk is a fine example that is perfectly balanced - the exquisite surface with its rich color and warm glowing patina are most compelling. Measurements: 89 7/8" H x 20 1/2" D x 40 1/4" W Condition Report: One glazed pane cracked (this could be replaced upon request); minor discolorations and blemish to the interior upholstery of the bookcase; several strips added to the reverse to heal shrinkage cracks, inactive pest damage to the backboards, all stained at the same time (likely ca. 1940-60); old surface, beautifully worn and patinated with discoloration, variation and use indicators as expected; one key included; a very fine presentation. The Process:The item is professionally packaged by our in-house team, palletized and shipped on a tractor trailer. Packing happens on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays so if your purchase comes through on a Wednesday, it may not be packed until the following Tuesday depending on our packing schedule. We release the palletized shipment to the LTL freight firm and upload tracking information to your orderOnce the freight has made it to the terminal nearest to your home, the dispatch team will notify the buyer and schedule a delivery day. The buyer is then required to make the necessary arrangements to receive and inspect the goods. Some freight firms will offer a delivery window while others will require the buyer or a representative for the buyer to be available the entire day. Please note, drivers are never allowed to call the buyer to update them on an expected delivery time, though it may be possible for the buyer to call the terminal and get a rough idea on updated timing throughout the day.On delivery day, the tractor trailer will arrive at the residence and the truck driver will lower the palletized shipment to the nearest curb with a lift-gate where the buyer will then be responsible for bringing it into the home, unpacking and disposing of the packing materials. If you require a higher level of service (i.e brought up the driveway and into the garage, brought into the entryway of the home, etc.) just contact us for a quote.
