Emlyn Williams as "CHARLES DICKENS" Plymouth Theatre 1952 Boston Tryout Playbill

Description: This is a rare broadside (single page playbill) from the Pre-Broadway engagement of the one-man show "EMLYN WILLIAMS as CHARLES DICKENS" at the Plymouth Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts. (The production would open February 4th, 1952 at the John Golden Theatre in New York and run for 48 performances before going back on the road. The show would return to New York's Bijou Theatre on April 20th, 1953 and run for an additional 24 performances.) ..... On December 27th, 1853, CHARLES DICKENS (at the height of his international fame as a novelist) ventured on something quite new. He gave, in Birmingham, England, a public "Reading" of one of his own stories. This turned out to be an historic occasion, opening up an extraordinary second career for the great writer. Spread over seventeen years, the "Readings" were each more sensationally successful than the last; less like a reading than Dickens' dramatic performance ... Ninety-eight years later, on October 29th, 1951, EMLYN WILLIAMS appeared before the London public "as Charles Dickens, giving a solo performance of scenes from the novels", an adventure as startlingly successful as it was bold, for Emlyn Williams has been engaged in it ever since. In the years that followed, he was to take the show from London to New York and on to Geneva, Berlin, Zurich, Copenhagen, North and South America, South Africa, Australia and the Soviet Union ..... CREDITS: Conceived and adapted by EMLYN WILLIAMS from the works of CHARLES DICKENS; Produced by S. HUROK ..... DETAILS: The single page, two-sided playbill measures 4 3/4" X 8 1/2" inches and includes production credits and synopsis of scenes, but no photo or bio of Mr. Williams ..... CONDITION: With the exception of minor soiling and moderate creasing, this playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard. Pay me securely with any major credit card through PayPal!
