Description: By the famous and prolific English 19th century dog artist EDWARD ARMFIELD (1817-1896), this is a classic painting of no less than three terriers chasing a rodent down a hole, and, apparently, finally cornering him there. The work, signed at lower left, is titled on the reverse overlap in the hand of the artist (also signed again nearby by the artist on the overlap) "Caught At Last" (great title!!). The oil on canvas measures 12" by 16" (17" by 21 1/4" framed). The painting is in very original condition with no restoration. There is some slight stretcher bar show-through at top and left and even, stable old craquelure throughout. Frame has a few losses. Armfield's works sell with some frequency in England, the Continent, and the United States, where they find favor with dog lovers. This is a very typical and classic example of his work.
