Born in INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, he attended CORNELL University but dropped out and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943. He was then deployed to Europe to fight in WW II and was captured by the Germans at the BATTLE OF THE BULGE. Originally Vonnegut's books were published as "science fiction." In 1963, he insisted that the SF label be removed from his books and his novels then began appearing on best-seller lists. In "Sirens," Vonnegut combines the ideas of space travel, superior aliens, and a space-time warp to explore the question of causality in the universe. Vonnegut suggests how people can survive in a world without meaning. Chapter one begins: "Between Timid and Timbuktu: I guess somebody up there likes me."---Malachi Constant. Everyone now knows how to find the meaning of life within himself. But mankind was not always so lucky . . .gimcrack religions were big business. . .mankind flung its advance agents very outward, ever outward. . .it flung them like stones." Winston Niles Rumfoord was a member of the one true American class and from the Rumfoord's class had come a tenth of American's presidents, a quarter of its explorers, a third of its Eastern Seaboard governors, a half of its full-time ornithologists, three-quarters of its great yachtsmen. . . it was a class singularly free of quacks." Rumfoord announced he was taking a dog on a space ship and going to Mars. Malachi Constant is to accompany Rumfoord and on Mars he is to be mated with Rumfoord's wife. Bobby Denton says that "God told us what we had to do on this wonderful space ship and God only gives us ten things to check----and not for any little trip to some big, dead poisonous stones out in space, but for a trip to the Kingdom of Heaven---on Mars. Other characters include: George M. Helmholtz, a former bandmaster and Roberta Wiley, a former teacher of algebra; Evangelist Bobby Denton; Unk and his son Chrono; Boaz; Sergeant Brackman; Beatrice Rumfoord; Kazak---Rumfoord's dog; and Salo, an eleven million old Earthling with three light deer-like legs---with no arms and three eyes; "he could walk on water." Noel Constant took "the Gideon Bible that was in his room, and he started with the first sentence in Genesis: In the beginning." 315 pages----a VERY RARE title---Out of Print.
