James Abbott McNeill Whistler, who lived from 1834--1903, was born in Massachusetts. In 1842, his father was employed by the Russian czar to built a railroad from St. Petersburg to Moscow and the Whistler family with their father. In 1845, he attended drawing lessons at Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. In 1847, Whistler visited England. In 1851, he entered WEST POINT but was discharged the next year for deficiency in chemistry. In 1855, he moved to Paris and attended Ecole Imperials et Speciale de Dessin. In 1857, he copied paintings at the Louvre. In 1863, his painting "The White Girl" was rejected at the Royal Academy and the Salon. in 1866, he journeyed to Chile. In 1870, his son, Charles James Whistler Hanson, was born to Whistler and a parlormaid. In 1873, Maud Franklin replaced Jo as his mistress and principal model. In 1874, he had his first one-man show in London. In 1880, he made fifty etchings of Venice. In 1888 Whistler married Beatrice Godwin. In 1895, Whistler took his ailing wife to Lyme Regia where he painted. In 1899, he exhibited paintings in Russian.
