MacGregor Jr. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In 1825 the government purchased 6 acres on the southern tip of Dutch Island and built the first 30 foot tower. In 1857, the old lighthouse and Keeper’s house was demolished and replaced with the present 42 foot tower and Keeper’s home. In 1924 a flashing red light was installed and in 1943 the light was automated as a red flashing beacon. During the following years the lighthouse fell into neglect and the Coast Guard in 1979 replaced the lighthouse with lighthouse and small oil house was restored over a seven year period.
