Many different handicrafts are included such as weaving, spinning, coverlets, quilting pottery and basketry along with hand made music instruments. This work seeks to expand the development of hand crafts in the Southern Highlands as a way to get money into the region. Discussion of the role of federal, state and private agencies in this process. Appendix, bibliography and index. Doris Ulmann, a wealthy northerner who had studied with Clarence H. White, traveled through Appalachia photographing the people with large format cameras and consummate artistry. The images taken for this book focus mainly on the craftspeople and their modern revival of pioneer skills. The book contains one hundred and twelve full page illustrations, eight of them in color, and the remainder in photogravure, including fifty eight by Ulmann. The handsome gravures are printed in a warm greyish brown tone. Years later a book offering an overview of her work in the region,The Appalachian Photographs of Doris Ulmann, was published with a text by John Jacob Niles. Boards have light wear to the edges and to the bottom of the spine. Gold lettering bright. Few scuff marks. Corners very lightly bumped. Book is clean and generally tight. Personal inscription to the blank side of the first picture. Hint of tanning to page edges. Hinges sound. DJ lightly soiled and rubbed w/ light wear and some short tears to edges.
