The fingerprint area is clear (not fogged up from cleaners - I always used tape to clean the device). The hardware does require software to use on a PC. Although you may be able to download drivers, it will not run unless you have DigitalPersona Pro software, existing software from a vendor. It will work with programs that integrate this reader specifically. DigitalPersona use to say it has been tested to work with over a million touches. After that, we got tired and stopped testing it.
