Der Orchideengarten or The Orchids Garden is considered the first magazine of the macabre and fantastic. Weird Tales, its nearest competitor, was first published in 1923, four years later. Subtitled Phantastische Blatter, loosely translated to Fantastic Pages. Edited by World War I correspondent Karl Hans Strobl and Alfons von Czibulka. Overall, the magazine published a selection of new and reprinted supernatural and horror stories from both domestic and foreign authors (Dickens, Pushkin, Maupassant, Poe, Valtaire, Wells, Hugo). The Orchids Garden is more well known as being one of the most beautiful fantasy magazines ever published. Artists included Heinrich Kley, Alred Kubin, Karl Ritter, Gustave Dore, Tony Johannot, Otto Linnekogel, Rolf von Hoerschelmann and many others.
